Is There A Difference Between Synchronous And Non Synchronous Online Courses?

An online course, also called distance education or online college course, is a web-based course offered either completely online (as in offering courses online) or by Internet connection from a location that does not require the student to be in a classroom. Although a large open course is usually an online course aiming at unrestricted access and unlimited participation, it can also include a discussion board, chat room or forum and even discussion groups. Online courses differ from the regular college courses in many ways, such as having no fixed lecture hours and students are allowed to do class work at their own pace. Some online courses require participants to have a high school diploma or an equivalent certificate.

The Internet makes the whole process of online classes possible. Students no longer have to set aside a time in their busy schedules to attend a physical class. Instead, they can sit in their pajamas and listen to lectures whenever they choose. In addition, online learning allows learners to access textbooks and other study materials at their convenience. There is a minimal requirement for memorization skills in online classes, so those who would otherwise find it difficult to learn may do well in them.

However, just like the offline classroom setting, there are also some limitations to the online environment. Unlike in a traditional classroom where students are required to write examinations and complete assignments on their own, internet-based courses give learners the freedom to skip these tasks. This helps save time but also makes the assignments more challenging. In addition, online courses are known for having shorter coursework due to the fact that students can use the internet to take shorter-term assignments and review them whenever they feel that they have grasped the concept.

Some courses allow the student to interact with the instructors during online learning sessions. While this feature can be useful for providing feedback to the instructor, it is not advisable for doing homework or for taking final exams. Instructors may disable chat functions and/or emails in order to prevent students from using them for personal purposes such as finding out about the syllabus or for getting detailed information about exams. Instructors are also usually more strict with regards to completing assignments and taking final exams compared to the usual scheduling procedures of learning. Online learning requires that you follow a strict schedule. Most of the time, students log into their courses when they have a free spot in the evening. They may also set an alarm for a specific day that they want to review all their lessons or to take final exams. Since they are the ones responsible for managing their own studying and for managing their schedules, learners have to be responsible for making sure they will actually attend their lessons and for finishing their assignments on time. Most instructors still require students to submit test reports and evaluations even if they did not manage to take exams or submit to any tests.

Experts say that synchronous online courses are most effective when used for improving a person’s general knowledge or for enhancing specific skills such as writing, reading and math. When used for these purposes, the process of teaching and learning is said to be taught through the synchronous process of teaching and learning from the teacher to the student.
